Diesel vs Electric MEWP: What to Check Before the Machine Reaches Your Site

Multiple aerial work platforms with colorful booms reaching skyward against a cloud-dotted backdrop.

The Abu Dhabi Museum Job

We went through weeks of paperwork to get that machine on site. Entry passes, security approvals, coordination with the client all done. The scissor lift was delivered. Half a day passed.

“Then the call came”.
The machine cannot work here. The reason? Engine noise. It was a diesel scissor lift inside a museum. The sound was too loud for the environment. They had to stop.
By that point, half a day of rental charges had already run. Delivery charges had already run. The machine had to come back. We had to absorb a loss. The client went over budget. Both sides lost.
Nobody was trying to cause a problem. The machine was right for the height. It was wrong for the location. Nobody checked that before the delivery.

The Event Site Manlift Mistake

Same situation, different details. A client needed a manlift for an outdoor event. We sent an electric manlift. Machine reached site, operator set it up, then the client said the lifting capacity is not enough for what they need.
Again machine came back. Charges still applied. Budget affected.
The height was right. The reach was there. The weight capacity was the issue. One spec not checked, whole job delayed.

Why This Keeps Happening

Clients call and say they need a scissor lift or a manlift. That is the start and end of the conversation. No details about the site, the environment, the load, the ceiling height, the floor type. Nothing.
Rental companies send the machine based on what was asked. If the question is incomplete, the machine will be wrong.
This is not one company’s problem. It happens across the industry. The fix is simple check the specs before you book, not after the machine arrives.
Diesel vs Electric: Which MEWP for Which Job
Here is a straight comparison. Every MEWP type has a diesel and electric version. The differences matter.

Scissor Lift

Electric scissor lifts are for indoor work warehouses, showrooms, AC fixing, lights fixing, any enclosed space. Zero emissions, quiet, no fumes. They run on battery so make sure the site has a charging point if the job is long.
Diesel scissor lifts are for outdoor work open yards, construction sites, anywhere with rough or uneven ground. They have more power and better ground clearance. Do not send a diesel scissor lift into a museum, hospital, shopping mall, or any noise-sensitive or fume-sensitive environment.

Boom Lift / Manlift

Electric boom lifts are for indoor or semi-outdoor work with smooth surfaces. Clean, quiet, good for events, indoor maintenance, facilities work.
Diesel boom lifts are for outdoor, rough terrain, high-reach work on construction sites. More powerful, more reach, no battery concern. Not suitable for enclosed or noise-sensitive spaces.

Telehandler

Electric telehandlers are newer in the UAE market. Good for indoor warehouse operations where fumes and noise are a concern.
Diesel telehandlers are the standard for construction and outdoor logistics. Higher capacity, works in rough conditions, runs longer.

Spider Lift

Electric spider lifts are for delicate indoor environments events, museums, historic buildings. Narrow, quiet, no fumes.
Diesel spider lifts are for outdoor, uneven terrain, higher reach jobs.

The Checklist Before You Call

Whether you are renting a machine or sending one to site, check these before anything moves.
Environment: Is the site indoors or outdoors? Open air or enclosed space? Any noise restrictions? Any fume restrictions?
Height: What is the exact working height required? Not approximate, exact.
Lifting capacity: What is the total load? People plus tools plus materials. Never assume the default is enough.
Floor surface: Is it concrete, rough ground, gravel, uneven terrain? This determines ground clearance needs.
Width and access: Can the machine physically enter the site? Check door widths, ceiling heights inside, ramp gradients.
Power access: If electric, is there a charging point on site?
Duration: How many hours per day? Electric machines have battery limits. Plan accordingly.
If you check all of these before the machine leaves the yard, you will not get that call halfway through the day.
